Giang T. Nguyen

Since July 2021, Giang T. Nguyen has been an Assistant Professor, heading the Junior Professorship of Haptic Communication Systems at TU Dresden. His research focuses on networked systems’ low latency, flexibility, and resilience to facilitate haptic communication.

Previously, he worked on networking and edge/cloud computing at the robotic company Wandelbots, which he co-founded in 2017. Between 2016 and 2019, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks, TU Dresden, working on network softwarization and information theory. Between 2010 and 2014, he was a DAAD scholar and a PhD researcher at TU Darmstadt, Germany. From 2002 till 2010, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Information Technology at the National University of Civil Engineering, Vietnam.

He obtained the Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam, in 2001, the Master’s degree in Telecommunications from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, in 2005, and the Doctoral degree in Computer Science from TU Dresden, in 2016.

Projects/Cooperation within CeTI you are involved in:

Since I have just started in July 2021, I have been actively searching for collaborations. There are several areas that I can participate. First, I would like to contribute to the use case of human-robot cohabitation. The goal is to enable one machine or robot to learn a skill directly from a human being. Then the robot passes the learned skill or behaviour to more robots even in different contexts. Subsequently, I plan to contribute to transferring skills and multimodal feedback between humans and machines. Thus, we would like to build intelligent networks of different scales, be it body-area or wide-area. Last but not least, I would like to participate in designing resilient communication systems. They need to be robust and resilient enough against packet errors and jitter in latency for novel control algorithms.

Further Questions:

What do you value most about your work at CeTI?

I highly value the interdisciplinary research of CeTI and the chance to collaborate with world-class experts in their fields.

What was your best moment at CeTI so far?

That is not easy because there are many. Working at CeTI, I constantly feel the positive energy. The admin team is excellent and very supportive. At the same time, research groups have achieved excellent research outcomes and are very collaborative.

What else would you like to research?

I am very interested in the resilience of networked systems. I would like to understand what makes specific systems recovering very quickly while other systems fall apart. Perhaps we will measure resilience quantitatively and use resilience not as a by-product but more as one of the goals in system design.

How do you spend your spare time?

It is pretty diverse :) My activities range from riding a bicycle along the Elbe to just sitting and reading books. Nevertheless, I especially like listening to lectures in closely related research areas from world-renowned scientists, such as Richard Hamming in telecommunications.
