What happens after graduating from high school? Which course of study is right for me? The University Information Day at the TU Dresden took place on January 12, 2023. Digitization affects everyone, robots will operate on us in the future, AI will control our cars and we want to learn to surf using smart clothing. The participants at CeTI were able to experience first-hand how all of this works and gained insights into the fields of study of mechanical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering. In addition, the labs of our colleagues from the Chair of Acoustics and Haptics could also be visited. Our intern went through all stations and gives insight how he experienced Uni Live.

Insights from our intern

Yannik’s day at Uni Live

As part of my internship at the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI), I participated in Uni Live. On 12.01.2023 Uni Live was held all over Saxony and interested students were given the opportunity to get more information about study programs at Saxon universities and colleges. In the Barkhausen Building at the TU Dresden, CeTI presented various demonstration experiments, such as a surfboard on which you can stand. The movements of the surfing person are tracked by a camera. In this demonstration experiment, one is shown, simultaneously through visual feedback, how well the optimal surfing position is imitated. I was allowed to present this demonstration experiment. Research is being done to build a smart suit that is equipped with sensors and gives you feedback through vibration so that you can correct your position while surfing. This type of technology is classified as Internet of Skills because of its application. That is, it is about learning new skills. In another demonstration experiment, you could play Temple Run through a glove equipped with initial sensors.

This glove is actually used in industry to teach robots human movements or to control robots. There were also many tours as part of Uni Live, including one on acoustics. In this tour, we were first taken into a room that absorbs as much sound as possible. Then we were taken to a hall room. In this room, special concrete is used that absorbs as little sound as possible, and the sound is evenly distributed through various wooden panels placed in the room. At the end of the tour we went to the multi-modal laboratory, which serves the purpose of testing not only the perception of one sense alone, but of several senses in combination. All in all, it can be said that all students were given the chance to gain an insight into various STEM study programs through the diverse offerings at CeTI.
