57 clusters of excellence launch joint podcast series on cutting-edge research in Germany – CeTI kicks off the series. On 1 September 2021, the first episode of the podcast of the clusters of excellence in Germany will be released: “Excellent explained – cutting-edge research for all”.

Ten science communicators from various clusters of excellence have jointly developed the concept for the new podcast series. The common goal is to inform a broad public about current topics and working methods in research. The scientists of the Clusters of Excellence talk with podcaster Larissa Vassilian about how cutting-edge research aims to find scientifically sound answers to relevant topics of our time.In the first episode, everything revolves around the cooperation of humans and machines,in short: the tactile internet. “When I’m at home in my old age and have trouble getting out of my chair, couldn’t my trousers help me stand up?” asks Prof. Frank H. P. Fitzek, for example. At CeTI, scientists from fields as diverse as electrical engineering, psychology, medicine, computer science and mechanical engineering are conducting joint research to explore the various possibilities of the tactile internet: Intelligent clothing is intended to help people stay independent in old age, or to support them in learning new skills such asplaying the piano when they are young, for example. In the near future, it should be possible to send not only images and sound but also touches via the internet. Prof. Dr. Stefanie Speidel, a computer scientist who conducts research in the field of cancer surgery, also has her say in this episode. She is developing intelligent assistance systems and robot-assisted applications for the operating theatre to improve the chances of recovery for patients.
