Verena Klös

Verena Klös joined the CeTI as junior professor for Tactile Computing in February 2023. Her research focuses on self-adaptive systems and (self-) explainability of cyber-physical systems, as well as formal methods to ensure safety of software systems. Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the “Software and Embedded Systems Engineering” chair, TU Berlin. She obtained her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree at TU Berlin, in 2010, 2012 and 2020 respectively.
She is organizing the CPS track at the Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA) and the International Workshop on Requirements Engineering for Explainable Systems (RE4ES) – co-located with the IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference.

Further questions:

What is your research interest?
(Self-) explainable intelligent cyber-physical systems, self-adaptive systems, formal modeling & verification, HW/SW-Co design

What motivated you to do what you do today?
I like the underlying logic and models for the complex behavior of context-aware and self-adaptive systems and how they are inspired by nature. When I studied this, I had a strong desire to make the resulting behavior more explainable.

What do you find particularly interesting about CeTI?
That different disciplines work together to achieve CeTI’s vision to enhance and improve the collaborations between humans and machines, and to create seemless human-robot collectives.

To which question have you not found an answer lately?
I am wondering to which extent systems should adapt themselves to human users and to which extent users have to adapt to the systems. I believe that both is necessary to achieve efficient and safe human-machine collaboration and that this decision is highly context-, task- and user-dependent and might need to be rebalanced at runtime.

How do you spend your free time?
I like being creative and creating something visible (as opposed to mostly virtual things I create at work): I like to sew clothes, I like to paint, and I like to craft things for my daughter’s play worlds. I also like to be outside, preferably at the North Sea, and reading books.
